As beliefs, the Pongal festival is celebrated to say thanks and to express gratitude to the Sun God and Indra God for giving blessings to farmers to get better crops that are harvested during this period. And it is celebrated for four days continuously. Thai Pongal is associated with Makar Sankranti; which is also, a harvest festival celebrated throughout India and comes on the fourteenth day of January. The great festival Pongal arrives around the same time as Lohri Festival and Makar Sankranti every year in the middle of January Month.

Food Dish
Food is cooked in clay pots under the Sun dedicated it to the Lord Sun. On this day people also distribute bunches of pieces of sugarcane and food which is made of boiled rice, milk, and jaggery. One of the beliefs is that Lord Krishna on the first day of Pongal, Bhogi day, raised a mountain named Govardhan through his little finger to save people, cattle by heavily raining by angry Lord Indra, known as rain God.

Secondly, Lord Shiva sent his bull Nandi to earth with one message pass to
people that take oil bath every day and eat once a month but due to
confusion Nandi passed the wrong message to people that eat daily and take an oil bath once
in a month and God Shiva became angry over Nandi and sent Ox to help people
during harvesting. From that period of time people start to celebrate Pongal as
a Festival. There are two types of Varieties of Pongal, is Sakkarai Pongal which is sweets. And other Pongal made from butter.

4) Kaanum Pongal is celebrated to thank friends and relatives for their kind cooperation
during the year and women pray for their brother for their prosperity. During this
last day, people like to visit each other and give gifts. Also people leftover
Pongal dish along with betel nuts, betel leaves, sugarcane all to gather put in
turmeric leaf in open.
